Please see the note from Tauranga City Basketball, General Manager Mark Rogers regarding the costs:

“TCBA is very aware of the rising cost to participate in basketball. TCBA has absorbed as much as possible of the rising costs associated with delivering our competitions. In 2024, we experienced a 50% increase in venue hire costs due to a review by Council that put pricing on a parallel with other major cities.. Our programmes now contribute more than $200,000 annually to utilise Council-owned facilities for community sport.

Other operating expenses have continued to rise, while funding from gaming charities has steadily declined across the community sector. Unfortunately, indoor sports face a significantly higher cost burden from Council for access to appropriate facilities. By comparison, outdoor sports codes do not pay facility hire fees for Tamariki and Rangatahi competitions and benefit from substantially lower rates for adult sport.

We welcome any constructive suggestions on how this issue might be addressed. Please feel free to contact Mark Rogers, General Manager, at gm@tauranga.basketball, or contact Council at info@tauranga.govt.nz to support our message that the cost of participating in community sport should be equitable and not a barrier to involvement.”
